Canon Powershot S200 Digital Elph CF card memory error?

I recently received a Canon Powershot S200 Digital Elph, and When I put the CF card into the slot, every time it is turned on it says CF card error. Any way I can fix this?
The CF card is brand new out of the package...and if it needs to be formatted,
